Lake Tahoe Trip
Visit my favorite photos from this trip
Carlos and Sara came to visit and I can’t remember if it was late March or late April. But there was a long debate about taking one of their free days here to visit Tahoe or Yosemite. The good news is that Sara got Carlos to promise a future trip to see Yosemite since they decided against it this time :)

So we headed to Tahoe and little did we know that it is quite seasonal. We had planned to try a hike or two just to find out the roads were closed to get access to the hikes. So we settled on walking around the beach. We were also surpised to see a fair amount of snow (hence why there weren’t too many people around). A quick note on the photography here. These shots were my not quite good enough to go on the website (with the exception of portraiture, I’m moving all my portraits to the blog). So there are better pictures of the Tahoe trip and I’ll include a link at the end for those that wanted to see the pictures.
There was a really long dock we came across. It was the main subject of my Tahoe pictures. But it was literally like 200 yards long. After walking that far we were debating how deep the water is. I remembered as a kid going to Tahoe and that the water could be deceptive since it is really clear. I put my legs in as far as I could without going swimming and felt bottom. If the water were two inches deeper, I would not have been brave enough to find out if I could reach it. But that being said I thought it would make an interesting picture shooting from the end of the dock to shore (crazy how shallow it is for such a long

distance at this beach). The water was freezing (remember there was still snow on the beach) and if you know me I’m a HUGE water wimp. But I thought it was worth it to venture into the cold water for a picture. My legs got so cold I couldn’t jump back up and Carlos had to help lift me back up onto the dock (I would have included those pictures, but it showed way too much man thigh and that’s never attractive). The cold sensation was the same as when you ice a sore muscle right before it goes numb and it just makes you ache. Yeah the same thing, but all over my legs. As you can tell below, Carlos thought I was a genius for jumping into the water.

This picture of the dock can show you how far I was from the shore. So I wasn’t in love with this version, but I think the black and white came out better. Is it more interesting than the similar photo shooting from the shore out to the lake?
I really don’t have a strong opinion yet. But I may have gotten wet and frozen for nothing :)

We experimented a little with shadows in the water. There is something about the texture of water that I really like. Check the gallery for the water texture shot. Its my favorite of that type to date.
And lastly I really like this picture of Carlos and Sara sitting on the dock. Sara was expecting their first child at the time and I could tell she was contemplating how to raise a child in a day with the strong liberal bias of the media and socialism looming around the corner. I’m sure they’ll do a great job. Thanks to Carlos and Sara for the visit and my first trip to Tahoe (Ashley was unfortunately studying for a final that night and missed the trip).

Jason, this pictures are really nice. We loved visiting there. It’s true that Ashley was quite surprised you got into the water, then we told her it was about taking a picture and she said, “oh… then that could be possible”. I was personally pretty impressed with your willpower to get in that water. I was convinced you were going to sink. We’re using the picture you take for our blog (see link)

I love the pictures – especially the first one! Also, when I went to school at UNR, I knew some professors and students that had a tradition of jumping into Lake Tahoe on New Year’s Day! Imagine how cold the water is then! (I think they are crazy!)

It’s for sure one of the best pictures we have of us. Thank you!
